Laurie was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, an aunt, friend and nurse. Family was her number one priority and her community was her extended family. Laurie began her career at Boston Children’s Hospital where she worked for 35 years, but it was her own children’s needs that brought her into the world of school nursing in the town of Braintree. While balancing two jobs, no task was too small for Laurie and no cause was too daunting; from day to day nursing school children, to getting legislation passed to require a full-time nurse in every public school. Education was one of Laurie's greatest passions. She not only took care of students of all abilities, she educated them on the best practices for optimum health and wellness. As Director of Nurses in Braintree and Weston Public school systems, as well as a member of the Board of Health, she educated teachers and legislators and advocated for the students in her care. “I look forward to working for you and assisting in every way I can promoting, protecting and improving the health and well-being of all students.” Laurie believed in and lived by those words daily. She worked passionately for the betterment of her community and for all of those around her. Considering Laurie's legacy, her family established this foundation with a focus on community, education and health. Laurie Melchionda was horrifically murdered at her home. In the days following, the community came together and held a Vigil to honor Laurie’s life. The overwhelming support shown by our family, friends and greater community spoke volumes of the amount of lives that Laurie has touched. She was a person who stopped at nothing to protect and promote the health and well-being of not just her own children, but also countless students and families in her community. It became clear to us that we could not let this senseless tragedy define Laurie’s life. The Laurie Melchionda Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, was launched by her family to carry on her legacy and continue the work that she set out to do. Our mission to spread “Laurie’s Love of Life” will continue her efforts of giving back to the community. Laurie (Ellis) Melchionda was born on May 5, 1961 to Mary and Dave Ellis. Raised in the Saint Mark’s Parish of Dorchester, Laurie and her siblings enjoyed a typical Dorchester childhood. Keeping their children involved in the community with sports, camping trips, skating at MDC rinks, and swimming at the YMCA was among many important lessons Laurie’s parents instilled in their children. Above all, was the importance of education. Laurie attended Saint Marks elementary school, graduated class of 1979 from Monsignor Ryan Memorial High School, and graduated class of 1984 from University of Massachusetts Boston Nursing program, as president of her nursing class. Her work ethic was evident, and everything she did was with great passion. If you knew Laurie, you knew her spirit was contagious! She loved music and danced through life. It was no surprise that she met her husband, Bob Melchionda, on the dance floor, their love was palpable. The two married in 1985 and had three children Robert, Anthony and Juliana. Laurie and Bob planted roots in Braintree, MA where they raised their family and became part of the larger community. Laurie’s loving nature, coupled with her passion for health and wellness led her to a career at Boston Children’s Hospital where she went on to work for 35 years. Her love of nursing was best exemplified with her work in the radiology department. Her patients and their families became family to her. Melchionda Scholars - Laurie Melchionda Scholarship It is with the continual support of our donors that the Laurie Melchionda Foundation is proud to instate the Laurie Melchionda Endowed Scholarship Fund and Annual Scholarship at her alma mater, UMass Boston. Laurie graduated class of 1984 from UMass Boston Nursing program, as president of her nursing class. The purpose of the Annual Laurie Melchionda Scholarship is to provide support to one or more undergraduate and/or graduate student(s) in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences who have unmet financial need. Preference will be given to students who are returning to their education after a cumulative gap of two or more years in higher education, making a career change to nursing, and/or are seeking a graduate degree to advance their nursing career. The scholarship will be a perpetual tribute to Laurie’s devotion to her community and the children for whom she cared at Boston Children’s Hospital, in the Braintree and Weston Public school systems, and as a member of the Braintree and Weston Board of Health. It is a testament to a working mom and the values she instilled in pursuing higher education. The recipients will be known as the Melchionda Scholars.
